An adaptive drone cloud surged forward, following the suspect's every move through alleys and along side streets."Autonomous UAVs bomb the shit out of foreign terrorists around the world. At home, we pay lawmakers millions for quadcopters with rubber bullets in a war against career criminals." Phelan cursed, accelerating around a group of pedestrians at over seventy miles per hour. "Red tape.""What the..." Castille tapped 'Refresh' on the drone multiview gallery. "Suspect disappeared, sir. No longer on-grid.""Last known location?""Jefferson and Bates, headed east." Time slid back two minutes onscreen for realtime review. "Looks like suspect entered Ford Underground Parking." Castille looked back to the satellite map. "Shouldn't we still have location data? How could --"Phelan honked the horn and waved as if parting the rush-hour crowd by hand. "D-7 Dispatch, this is Unit 1. Map the closest responding officer for ongoing E.J.A.""One moment please." Dispatch returned. "St. Antoine Street between East Lafayette Street and Monroe Avenue, approximately four minutes from your current location."On the main touchscreen between Phelan and Castille, a best-route path snaked from their location to a pin marker labeled Unit 5. A flag attached to the pin further noted that Unit 5 was occupied by officers Villeneuve and Fernandes. One block farther along St. Antoine Street, a second pin marked the location of Officer Bollinger. "Watch for the Sid to show up. If no sign in five minutes, activate NDPD SWAT to flush him out.""Roger." Castille retrieved a laptop whose keyboard and screen sprung open from its retracted position just above the glove compartment. "Trying to access Drone Unit 1. Creds refused, permission denied. Do I have the wrong login? Should I try to circumvent?"Phelan's driving gloves gripped the steering wheel, fist thumping the horn while commandeering the squad car around human and vehicular traffic. "Drop it. Liberty Corrections has its own cyber unit; I'll make that call if necessary. Just watch for the Sid."Castille's fingertips stopped mid-command. "Yes sir. Activating SWAT team in five."Unit 1 came abreast of Unit 5, its modified racing suspension appearing diminutive beside the heavy-grilled, offroad capable, urban-armored SUV.Read the full scene 2: Broken Windows In the House of Perfect Memory.
